When was the last time you had your teeth cleaned? Here are 10 signs that it’s time to see your dentist.
Regular dental appointments every 6-months are vital for our oral health, however, nearly 100 million Americans fail to see a dentist even once a year. Whether it’s fear, lack of insurance or a busy schedule, coming in to see the dentist shouldn’t be put off for too long.
Here are 10 signs that it’s time to see your dentist:
Aching tooth- Toothaches occur when there is an infection, gum disease, teeth grinding or a misaligned bite.
Bad breath- If bad breath persists after brushing and flossing, then it could be a sign of gum disease, a cavity or another oral problem.
Teeth discoloration- If those little brown marks on your teeth aren’t disappearing after brushing, it’s time to have a professional cleaning.
Mouth sores- Sores such as ulcers typically go away on their own, however, some may be signs of fungal or viral infections. If there are white colored sores on the inside of your cheeks, gums or tongue, you may be at risk of cancer.
Sensitive teeth- If you notice sensitivity when eating or drinking hot and cold food or drinks, it’s either because of brushing too hard or using harsh mouthwashes. More serious reasons would include receding gums, enamel erosion, decay or a leaky filling.
Loose teeth- While brushing and flossing are the best way to prevent loose teeth, seeing the dentist every six months will ensure your teeth don’t loosen.
Bleeding or irritated gums- Usually caused by vigorous brushing or flossing. It isn’t a concern unless you are also experiencing tenderness and soreness which are early signs of gingivitis.
Dry mouth- Feeling constantly thirsty means your mouth has stopped producing saliva which makes you susceptible to infections and tooth decay.
Painful jaw- Jaw pain usually is from grinding your teeth which can be fixed by your dentist.
Bad taste in mouth- Having a metallic or unfamiliar taste in your mouth could be a sign of gingivitis.
